I will provide you with sound, practical nutrition counseling to help you meet your goals. No fads or gimmicks! I don’t believe in a “one size fits all approach” and therefore my nutrition recommendations are always tailored to the individual. With over 20 years experience as a registered dietitian, I am also trained to provide Medical Nutrition Therapy. During MNT, I counsel clients with conditions including diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, and gastro-intestinal disease on diet, lifestyle and behavior modification to optimize health.

Your medical history, goals, lifestyle, and food preferences will always be taken into account in my counseling sessions. You will be provided with customized meal plans and goals – all in the first session with me. Follow up sessions provide additional support to help you stay on track and deal with day to day challenges.

All of my counseling sessions are available in my NYC office, via phone or via Skype.

Nutritional counseling and Medical Nutrition Therapy with Martha may include the following:

Weight Loss Whether you want to lose 5 pounds or 50 pounds, I will provide you with the guidance and support you need to lose weight and keep it off. No one diet fits all when it comes to weight loss. You will receive customized meal plans and goals taking into account your lifestyle, schedule and food preferences. We will work on making permanent behavior changes to help you lose the weight and keep it off.

Heart Health Having high cholesterol, high triglycerides and/or high blood pressure can put you at increased risk for heart disease. My counseling sessions will decrease your risk factors. Often times people get focused on what they “shouldn’t” eat. The good news is that certain foods can actually lower blood cholesterol and blood pressure. And with my guidance, a heart healthy diet can fit into your busy lifestyle!

Prediabetes One third of all adult Americans and half of Americans over the age of 65 have prediabetes. Making lifestyle changes can prevent or delay prediabetes from becoming diabetes. There are many misconceptions out there regarding what you should and shouldn’t eat. Diabetes As a certified diabetes educator, I will provide you with nutrition and lifestyle guidance that you need to take control of your diabetes. Learn how to plan meals and snacks that you enjoy and that will keep your blood sugar in control.

IBS If you have IBS, you’re likely plagued with symptoms of gas, bloating, abdominal pain, constipation and /or diarrhea. And chances are that the usual recommendations of increasing (or decreasing fiber) and consuming lactose-free foods are not helping you feel any better. The good news is that a Low FODMAP (acronym for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols) diet can help up to 80% of people with their symptoms. These fermentable carbs can wreak havoc in the GI tracts of people with IBS. I will guide you through the systematic approach of eliminating –  then reintroducing these carbohydrates. At the end of the challenge phase, you’ll have a very good understanding of what foods you can tolerate and in what quantities. You won’t have to stay on a restrictive diet forever … and you can be bloat-free! I have special training in this diet and the majority of my patients with IBS are symptom free after just a few sessions.

Women’s Health If you are a woman in your 40’s – 50’s experiencing weight gain, weight shifts, mood changes and a sudden increase in cholesterol, you aren’t alone. The average woman going through peri/menopause gains 10 pounds! But it doesn’t have to be this way. I can help you lose weight or prevent weight gain as well as decrease your risk of heart disease and osteoporosis. My counseling sessions can also help you control cravings, improve mood and energy levels.

Sports Nutrition Whether your goal is to improve your sports performance, train for your first marathon, increase muscle mass or feel more energized for your workouts, you will benefit from a counseling session with me. You can only train as good as the fuel you put into your body! As a long distance cyclist and former exercise instructor, I understand the importance of the right nutrition when it comes to exercising and will customize a plan for you.

Lifestyle/Wellness Want to feel energized and look and feel your best? Maintain good health as you age? I will review your diet/exercise/sleep/supplement routine and make suggestions as to how you can make it even better. And as a busy New Yorker myself, I can totally relate to how difficult it can be to eat healthy with a busy schedule. I will take this into account when I customize your meal plans. You will get suggestions for ordering out, restaurant dining, energizing snacks, supermarket grocery list … and more.

PCOS I have been specializing in diet and PCOS for the past 15 years and understand the unique nutritional concerns of women with PCOS. You will receive an individualized eating plan to help you meet your goals, whether they be to lose weight, decrease cholesterol or blood sugar, decrease hair and skin problems, or improve fertility.
